What is Breathwork?

What is breathwork?

Breathwork refers to a range of breathing practices  that use conscious, connected breathing to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Breathwork is increasingly gaining popularity because of its scientifically proven health benefits. It is a form of active meditation that can help to reduce stress, increase energy, and improve overall health. Here are 13 Life-Changing Books on Breathwork you must read if you like breathwork.

Breathwork can also help to process and release stuck emotions, activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms, and bring greater insight, clarity, and awareness.

Benefits of Breathwork

Breathwork provides many benefits (backed by science) for our physical, mental, and emotional health. Some of the benefits that people often experience from breathwork include:

  1. Better sleep: Breathwork can help improve sleep quality and promote relaxation before bed.
  2. Pain relief: I can help reduce pain and improve overall physical comfort.
  3. Stress reduction: Breathwork techniques can help reduce stress and anxiety by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and a sense of calm.
  4. Improve mental clarity: Focusing on the breath can help quiet the mind and improve mental clarity and concentration.
  5. Enhanced immune function: Deep breathing and other breathwork techniques can stimulate the lymphatic system and improve immune function.
  6. Better sleep: Breathwork can help improve sleep quality and promote relaxation before bed.

Different Types of Breathwork

Different Types of Breathwork

It’s important to do some research before starting breathwork to check which type is right for you. Secondly ther are 72 Best Meditation Teacher Trainings & Certifications in 2023  you can join.  There are many different types of breathwork, each with its own unique benefits. Some of the most popular types of breathwork include:

1. Conscious Connected Breathing

Conscious Connected Breathwork is a type of breathwork that involves breathing deeply and continuously without pausing between inhales and exhales. The breath is taken consistently either through the nose or mouth. Conscious Breathwork is an umbrella term for a variety of breathing practices. It’s similar to Circular Breathwork, the differences read below.

2. Circular Breathing

Circular Breathwork is similar to Conscious Connected Breathwork but it can involve pauses in the breath cycle. This breath pattern usually consists of longer and slower exhales and inhales than in Conscious Connected Breathing. Both inhalation and exhalation have a similar duration.

3. Holotropic Breathwork

Holotropic Breathwork was developed by Dr. Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof in the 1970s. It is a form of non-ordinary or altered state of consciousness therapy. It influences your mental, emotional and physical states by using deep and rapid breathing techniques (hyperventilation) to access the unconscious mind and promote emotional and spiritual healing. This is one of the most popular breathwork types.

4. Biodynamic Breathwork

The 6-Element method of the BioDynamic Breathwork empowers the healing process of the body, leading to the elimination of long-term stress and the reconfiguration of cellular systems. The 6 elements used in this practice are: Breath Movement; Sound; Touch; Emotions; Meditation.

5. Shamanic Breathwork

Shamanic Breathwork is a type of breathwork that draws on the traditions of shamanism and indigenous cultures. Shamanic Breathwork practice combines different type of breathworks, movement, music and sacred rituals which allows practitioners to enter an altered state of consciousness, allowing for spiritual exploration and healing. If shamanic breathwork is done correctly, it can assist in recalling repressed emotions and communicating with spiritual guides. This can lead to the release of unwanted energies, emotional burdens, and harmful influences.

6. Pranayama

Pranayama is a purifying practice that is used to prepare for meditation. There are various types of Pranayama, such as deep belly breathing, alternate nostril breathing, and breath retention. Each Pranayama has a different aim, but they all originated from the ancient text called ‘The Yoga Sutras’. Although Yoga and Tantra teachers may sometimes refer to Pranayama as ‘Breathwork’, it is more accurate to call it Pranayama as using the term ‘Breathwork’ can cause confusion. If you come across a class advertised as ‘Yoga and Breathwork’, ‘Tantra and Breathwork’, or ‘Kundalini and Breathwork’, it is most likely that Pranayama is being offered instead of Breathwork. Breathwork typically involves letting go and taking a deep inner journey, whereas Pranayama focuses more on breath and mind control and does not involve such a deep inner journey.

7. Rebirthing breathwork

During the 1960s, Leonard Orr created a technique called rebirthing breathwork, which aims to assist individuals in breaking free from negative patterns in their lives. The process consists of nine phases, including introduction, defense, immersion, inversion, association, insight/epiphany, transliminal, deep relaxation, and return. The immersion, association, and insight/epiphany stages are particularly focused on processing traumatic memories. In the past, and occasionally still today, rebirthing breathwork sessions are conducted in a bathtub to replicate the experience of being in the womb.

8. Transformational breathwork

The foundation of transformational breathing is conscious diaphragmatic breathing, which involves taking slow, deep breaths from the mouth into the abdomen and letting them out naturally. In order to facilitate the release of mental and emotional strain, facilitators locate tension points and apply pressure to specific energetic spots. Participants’ inner journeys may also be supported through toning, pounding, and affirmations. Sound healing, breath analysis, and other techniques are all used in transformational breathing.

9. Neurodynamic breathwork

Neurodynamic breathwork involves a deliberate and connected breathing technique accompanied by thoughtfully selected music to create a specific emotional response. Unlike Holotropic Breathwork, this method does not require a facilitator to guide or direct the breathwork journey, as it is self-guided and considered safer to perform solo.

FAQs

How to choose breathwork training that’s right for you?

  1. Qualifications of the instructor: Look for an instructor who is certified and has experience in breathwork. Check their credentials and verify their qualifications before enrolling in any classes.
  2. Safety: Breathwork can be intense and may have side effects. It is important to ensure that the instructor is trained in safety procedures and can monitor participants to prevent any adverse reactions. This is the reason why we suggest choosing Live Session or In-person breathwork training.
  3. Style of breathwork: There are many styles of breathwork, such as Holotropic, Transformational, and Wim Hof Method. Look for a class that offers a style of breathwork that aligns with your goals and preferences.
  4. Class size: Consider the size of the class and the level of individual attention you will receive from the instructor. A smaller class size may provide more personalized instruction and support.
  5. Location and schedule: Look for a class that is conveniently located and fits into your schedule.
  6. Reviews and testimonials: Read reviews and testimonials from past participants to gauge the effectiveness and quality of the class.
  7. Cost: Consider the cost of the class and whether it fits within your budget. Keep in mind that more experienced and qualified instructors may charge higher fees.

How do you become a certified breathwork facilitator?

To become a breathwork facilitator, you typically need to complete a training program with a certified instructor or organization. These programs can range from a few days to several months and cover various types of breathwork techniques, anatomy, and facilitation skills. Some programs may also require additional practice sessions and supervision.

Which breathwork training is the best?

It is difficult to say which breathwork training is the best as it depends on individual preferences and needs. Some of the most popular breathwork training programs include Holotropic Breathwork, Conscious Connected Breathwork, Transformational Breathwork, and Wim Hof Method. However, each program has its own unique approach and focus. It is important to do research, read reviews, and speak to professionals to determine which program aligns with your goals and interests. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the program is led by qualified instructors and meets industry standards for safety and effectiveness.
